How do pig farmers respond after heavy rains?

Facing the impact of extreme weather, the risk of disasters in pig farms is also increasing. How should pig farmers respond to this scenario?

01  Do a good job in preventing moisture

When heavy rains arrive, medicines and other items that need to be protected from moisture should be moved to a dry, high place. Storage rooms for feed and feed ingredients must also have complete waterproofing, leakage and moisture-proof measures.

02  Strengthen drainage and waterlogging prevention

The buildings in the production area must have complete drainage capacity to quickly discharge accumulated water. Ditches must be dug in low-lying waterlogged areas to reduce the impact of rainwater on the pigs. In pig houses with water-soaked manure systems, the manure water under the floor must be discharged in advance and the drainage pipes must be kept clear.

03  Protect the pig house environment

Do a good job in reinforcing the houses. Heavy rains are usually accompanied by strong winds. Reinforce the trees outside the pig houses to prevent rain leakage, collapse, and damage to the pig houses; repair doors and windows to prevent damage that will cause greater stress to the pigs; inspect and repair the pigs in advance. The on-site power security system prevents power accidents and ensures normal power supply.

04  Prevent mold growth

Continuous heavy rains, very high relative air humidity and high temperatures are a suitable environment for mold growth, so feed mildew must be prevented as much as possible. Eat as much feed as you want, open as many packages as possible, and try not to open unused premixes, corn, soybean meal, etc.; try to use cement and floor tiles for the floor of the feed room, because red soil and other places can easily absorb moisture; use bricks, wooden sticks, etc. Raise the bedding. For feed that is suspected to be moldy, add mold removal and detoxification products to prevent mold from causing damage to the pigs.

05  Prevent stress and improve immunity

Strong convective weather such as heavy rain and lightning will cause rapid changes in temperature, which can easily lead to stress reactions in pigs. To this end, it is necessary to strengthen the anti-stress ability of pigs and reduce the occurrence of diseases. Multivitamins, trace elements and other antioxidants can be added to the feed. Stress products enhance the anti-stress ability and disease resistance of pigs.

06  Disinfect after rain to prevent the spread of viruses

Major disasters can be followed by major epidemics, especially after rain disasters, which can easily lead to epidemics. When the animals cannot be processed during heavy rains, they should be covered with plastic films and stacked for centralized fermentation. After the rain recedes, the dead animals should be disposed of harmlessly immediately to avoid greater spread of the disease. After the site is cleaned, potassium monopersulfate can be used to disinfect the entire site, especially areas that have been flooded by water.
