Tiamulin Hydrogen Fumarate
Tiamulin hydrogen fumarate
Tiamulin hydrogen fumarate is a derivative of pleuromutilin, can be used in veterinary medicine particularly for pigs and poultry. It is a diterpene antimicrobial with a pleuromutilin chemical structure similar to that of valnemulin.
Tiamulin hydrogen fumarate is white or almost white crystalline powder, odorless and tasteless. It is easily soluble in methanol or ethanol, soluble in water, slightly soluble in acetone, and almost insoluble in hexane .
Mode of action and characteristics
This product is a bacteriostatic antibiotic, but it also has bactericidal effect on sensitive bacteria at very high concentration. The antibacterial mechanism of action is to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50s subunit of the bacterial ribosome.
Tiamulin hydrogen fumarate has good antibacterial activity against a variety of Gram-positive cocci, including most staphylococci and streptococci (except group D streptococci) and a variety of mycoplasmas and some spirochetes. However, the antibacterial activity against some negative bacteria is very weak, except for Haemophilus species and some E. coli and Klebsiella strains.
Tiamulin hydrogen fumarate is easy to be absorbed after oral administration in pigs. About 85% of a single dose is absorbed, and peak concentrations occur in 2 to 4 hours. It is widely distributed in the body, with the highest concentration in the lungs. Tiamulin hydrogen fumarate is metabolized in the body into 20 metabolites, some with antibacterial tranquility. About 30% of the metabolites are excreted in the urine and the remainder is excreted in the feces.
Usage
Tiamulin hydrogen fumarate is used for the treatment of swine pneumonia caused by Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae and swine blood dysentery caused by Treponema hyodysenteriae. As a feed drug additive for pigs can promote weight gain. It is also effective against chronic respiratory disease in chickens, mycoplasma hyopneumonia, and staphylococcal synovitis in chickens.
